Family

The ultimate bonding experience

For small children, Africa is the ideal playground, where they can see the animals from their books come to life before them. For slightly older kids and teenagers, they’ll love the adventurous activities Africa has to offer such as going on a 4X4 game drive through the mud. Our team of experts is specialized in selecting the best areas, camps and activities to suit your children’s specific ages and interests, making sure that everyone stays safe and entertained!

Types of accommodations:

Mobile tented camps

Taking the whole family on a safari can get expensive, but you can save by staying in mobile tented camps. In this type of accommodation, you sleep in large Eureka tents for 2 people and travel with a private vehicle from public campsite to public campsite daily with a driver/guide, following the migration of animals. The facilities in mobile tented camps could be quite “down to earth” (i.e. bucket showers). However, certain campsites have age limits as wild animals can roam in close proximity to camps, so not all mobile campsites are suitable for young children. Our knowledgeable staff will advise you on the safest campsites based on your children’s ages.

Suggested accommodations: Lemala tented camps, Serengeti Safari Camp

Permanent tents and lodges

Permanent tents and lodges are a good option for families looking for more comfort but who still want to be in the wilderness. These are more upscale and provide many added creature comforts. Tanzania offers a few family-oriented lodges that have special drives for children or baby-sitting options to leave your children at the lodge when they get tired.

Where to go:

When planning family safaris, we look to areas where everything is nearby so you don’t have to go on long drives with often-impatient children, to view animals, and you can leave the kids for a few hours back at the lodge while you explore.

Selous is a perfect destination for family safaris, as you can combine game drives with fishing, walking safaris, boating and more activities all in the same area. Northern Tanzania is also a great place to go, where you are sure to see most of the major species of mammal without having to travel far.

Combining a safari with a beach getaway makes for a great family vacation. Tanzania’s more family-friendly beach locations include Zanzibar and Chumbe Island.
